European airlines are becoming highly competitive with new discount airlines grabbing significant market share. Ryanair and easyJet — Europe's top discounters — have perfected gimmicks using incredibly low fares with many flights under $5. Unlike no-frills flights on Ryanair or easyJet, Air Berlin offers perks that are expected on most U.S. domestic carriers: food, assigned seats and in-flight entertainment. On all Air Berlin flights, passengers get at least some sort of non-alcoholic drink and snack, and on the longer routes to Spain, they get a meal. On Ryanair and easyJet, passengers get nothing for free, not even a glass of water. The German-based discounter rarely advertises fares of less than a dollar, but its prices always include taxes and fees. The 19-euro one-way fare found the same day on Air Berlin's Web site between London's Stansted Airport and Berlin comes out to about $23, slightly less than Ryanair's "89-cent" fare.
Some European discounters — especially Ryanair — have a strategy of flying to cheap-but-distant airports far from city centers. That doesn't have to be an insurmountable obstacle. With a little planning, travelers can save money by using multiple carriers. For example, a flier could book a trip from London to Rome on Ryanair, from Rome to Berlin on Air Berlin and from Berlin to Paris on easyJet — possibly for pocket change, depending on constantly changing fare promotions.
